December 1979

The envelope had finally flopped on to the doormat. Contents brief. Formal.

Dear Mrs Foreman, Please attend…

‘I get a date,’ she’d bawled into the phone. No time for a polite hello. ‘You could come?’

Ordinarily, Luci would be the one by her side. But even mentioning the visit was unthinkable.

Butterflies grew huge wings inside of her. A knee rested against Davey’s, as if to keep herself propped up. The two of them faced Raef, who was quiet and still. Staring at his hands.

The weight that had fallen from him was yet to return. His bony collarbone peered sharp beneath a loose shirt. She’d sent his clothes. His possessions. They’d returned the wood and the whittling knife, patiently ignored her plea: ‘But it’s for carving.’ Too much like contraband for him to keep.

Did he recognise them? Know they were there? It was impossible to tell. She twittered. Nervous of allowing silence to descend when Davey paused and shifted in his seat. Of slipping up and talking about Luci. Their holiday. Their new home.

Time was up. Thirty dry-mouthed minutes dodging no-go areas. Prodding for a reaction that never came.

‘He’s still getting used to the meds. Maybe he’ll be more responsive next time,’ the doctor said.

That was as good as it was going to get. A promise of maybe.
